A lot of people seem kind of excited that iOS 5 now gives alternate Routes on Google maps in iPhone. It’s great to have alternate routes drawn out, but I really wish they would allow me to rename routes 1-2-3 to A-B-C because in my area, as you can see in the screen capture from my trusty “old” iPhone 4, an actual “Route 1” exists (which is actually THE Route 1, spanning every city and town on the east coast from Maine to Miami). Alternate route “1” and Route “1” are all over the map!
There are also a very heavily traveled “Route 2” and a “Route 3” nearby, so these route alternative flags may become confusing in some situations. This Route X factor must exist in many areas, so a simple toggle or some easy method of setting the preference for route option display from Apple / Google would be helpful.
Oh, and why is there no “Maps” in settings on iPhone? Everything else has settings. Maybe this would be a good place (route) to start, Apple!
I always hassle my dad about the “old” news he sends me. Although the story is already “old” (in web years), I was shocked that a link he sent me had never been tweeted (according to isitiold)

There is a horse in the Apple Store and no one sees it but me.
I think, “Why?” What is the villain here that blinds all of these people to this situation? Am I nuts for thinking this is exceptional? Does anyone else see this? Did I accidentally drop acid and not realize? I must take a photo….
Yet another reason why retail sucks.
seriously, ping is better than anything
Are you using Ping already? What do you think so far?

A few days ago, I called Apple to cancel my iPhone 4 order. I was getting kind of edgy about the rumored recall and talk of problems with the antenna and signal strength. Also, during the sales process, their representative (a “Mac Expert”) told me that what I had read about the new firmware effectively eliminating any rumored antenna problems (this was back in June) was in fact true. He assured me I would have no problem with the antenna by the time my phone arrived since the firmware update would be available by that time.
This assurance from Apple during the sales process was largely why I decided to go ahead and order the phone instead of just keeping my practically brand new iPhone 3GS. Some of my friends have sold their 3GS (and older 3G) iPhones on Craigslist upon receiving their iPhone 4 and with the rumored antenna issue quelled (or so I thought), I figured… why not?
I was really surprised when Apple wouldn’t include a free “bumper” case to keep both my phone and Apple Care order. I mean, it had been proven to fix the issue with the antenna, right? Plus the “expert” that sold me the phone when I called back in June to order the iPhone 4 lied to me when he told me the next firmware update was going to eliminate any antenna problem, so it would be a nice gesture to keep my business, wouldn’t it?
Obviously, the idea was sound. Apple made it policy today to give all iPhone 4 customers a “bumper” case. Wow, what I good idea. I wonder how long that one took to come up with?
Unfortunately, Apple refused to reinstate my order or to prioritize a new one for me when I called today. When I very nicely laid out the logic that they should do just that to a supervisor, she flatly informed me that when I canceled I acknowledged that the order could not be reinstated, etc, etc. and that when I canceled, it was based on rumor.
I laughed and asked her if she thought the free “bumper” case policy announced today was the result of rumor. I got no response on that until she finally broke the silence and asked if there was anything else she could help me with. How ridiculously lame and weak.
Maybe I was dead wrong about Apple?
At 15 minutes, I had been on hold for 15 minutes.
I had canceled the order before 40 minutes. I think Apple got a lot of calls today because of all the hype in the news over Consumer Reports findings.
I’m going to get an iPhone 4 when it comes out on Verizon. I really had to push myself to cancel that order today!
Now I know why I waited!
