Not for nothing, but a lot of the companies shown are part of larger corporations, some not even pictured. And Internet Explorer? That’s not even a company.
Live Search is not evolving when shawnblog.com doesn’t appear on page one of the search results for shawn blog.
The fact is that Microsoft could have finally developed the killer search engine that leaves Google and all the rest in the dust but it won’t matter one bit with a name like Bing. Ask any serious marketer what they they think – how would they sell it?
Even with a killer search platform Microsoft has forgotten the most important thing – Google owns the culture. It owns the verb. How often have you seen someone write “I googled you last night”, or said “I’ll google that for you and get right back”. Google has become the search language verb. From pretty well primary school right through to the grave Google has become the defacto word for search.
If Microsoft even wants to have a chance regardless of the quality of their search platform, although it would be easier if it has been improved, they are going to have to fight for the verb. they are going to need to replace our usage of google with one of their own and Bing ain’t gonna do it.
Think about it.
Are you gonna tell someone that you binged them to find out who they were?
Are you going to be courageous to even utter the words hang on while I bing for that information with a serious look on your face?
I doubt it.
Silly Microsoft, Bing is for cherries – not serious search engine marketing .

I got a visit from a search engine that I was unfamiliar with, so I attempted to access the site, only to get an access denied error. I searched a bit and see now that it’s a Microsoft project. Apparently, it has something to do with images. It is being used or maybe tested by the drones over there in Bellevue and they found Mr. Spock’s codes are always perfect :-)

This bums me out just a little. See, I switched to Mac because Microsoft is forcing users to migrate to Vista. I should have waited though. I would have gotten the latest and greatest Mac next year instead of what will then be my “old” MacBook Pro. Of course, I’ll be ready for the new hotness by then anyway, but I probably could have muddled through with my old Fujitsu Lifebook until next year (and saved some cash).
Vista sucks. A friend of mine who is not all that geeky or a heavy computer user (but a business owner and heavy golfer with a life many might envy) said it shouldn’t be named Vista, but sucking cavern or ravine or something like that. He’s a surveyor. It’s all about perspective, right?
Yeah, Vista sucks no matter where you stand.

I’m not a fanboy—seriously, but I am loving my MacBook Pro! (via shawnblog)
Windoze user here.
Price and convenience. My work requires a lot of Microsoft powered this and that and I like just using one machine most of the time and certainly one platform or OS all of the time. I must admit it has been a long time since I have used a Mac regularly, so I don’t know how simple or difficult it would be for me to switch back and forth all the time. When I occasionally step into an Apple Store to check out the latest and greatest, I find no challenge in simple web surfing, etc. I have no idea how to use most of what those machines can do though and I’m not sure I have time or patience for the learning curve.
Oh, and the price. The setup I want is in the $10k range. So, maybe I’ll spring for something really awesome when I get all caught up with Uncle Sam’s extortion unit. Maybe! Until then, I have to settle for the occasional ridiculous performance that I’m still being trained to accept, live with and not throw out the window.
Nothing is perfect, but I can’t believe Mac users are just brainwashed to say such wonderful things about their computers. Something good is obviously going on there and it shows.
It seems like most Tumblr users are Mac people. But there must be some PC/Windows Tumblrs out there. If you are a Windows user, can you explain why in a reblog?
If you are a former Windows user, like me, you can still participate. Just reblog why you used a PC before you switched.
In my case, I thought PCs were the real deal, while Macs were slow and for posers. Two years ago, the most serious computer users at my company (Kunal and Andrew) were like, Yeah, Macs are so much better. Reluctantly, I tried one and immediately fell in love. I soon enjoyed being a computer user without needing to be a computer expert anymore.
The reasoning for me is pretty straight-forward:
- My work is heavily invested in Microsoft technologies. I lead infrastructure and web development groups that rely heavily on Active Directory, Exchange and SharePoint (with which I have a love/hate relationship).
- My career (enthusiast, developer, consultant, yada-yada, technology strategist) had me using DOS, then DOS/Win, then NetWare, then (inevitably) Windows Server products. All my employers and clients over the years had to use Windows (for a myriad of reasons), so I did as well. It hasn’t been exclusive, nor am I married to the Blue Monster. Change is inevitable. I generally follow the trend and blaze trails only when it makes sense to lead — that’s what keeps risk-adverse clients and pointy-haired bosses happy.
- Truthfully, it really boils down to being the Path of Least Resistance (I strive to be lazy in a smart way). Windows has always been “good enough” to “get the job done” — I always found that I could work effectively and efficiently (or, more modestly, my more inefficient and haphazard moments have not been the fault of Windows). *grin*
I suppose that makes me a pretty typical IT manager with a history in the trenches — I hope no one is disappointed.
The more interesting question is, with 5 computers at home and 3 on my desk at work all running flavors of Windows and GNU/Linux, why is my laptop now a Mac? That deserves its own post at some point…. ;-)
