Mitt Romney just cost himself the election: This video comes from mother jones- someone got ahold of footage from one of his private fundraisers, rambling about entitlements and the poor, saying in essence he doesn’t care about them.
This is one of those moments that will be spoken of in every discussion of how to lose an election alongside that Nixon/Kennedy debate and Howard Dean screaming.
Have you guys all seen this yet?
Also, I am going to go ahead and embarrass myself publicly by sharing something here: I have never voted before. I am 23 and not an idiot but I haven’t voted. I feel vaguely disconnected from politics and have a “I will just move back to Canada” approach to my future life. I lived in Maryland during the last election and my polling location would have been an hour away from where I was living at the time, and I had work all day, and I knew we were going to go Democrat anyway so I just didn’t care.
But this year I have properly registered, in New York, at my address. This year I am going to vote. Because this year I feel much more strongly, and this year I want to know that if my choice for president does not win, it won’t be because I didn’t vote. And sure, it won’t be because of that anyway, but like, fuck, you guys, Mitt Romney is such an asshole, he seems like a dude who just really wants to be president so he can be president. Meanwhile, Barack Obama hasn’t been perfect, but you don’t just flip a switch and fix major problems in a massive country. He’s not perfect, and sometimes he does stuff like hang out with Beyonce or share home-brew beer recipes, and that feels more cheap than cool. But he is so much closer to a real person than Mitt Romney will ever be. Can we talk about all the social media stuff the White House has done in the last four years? Can we talk about how much catch-up work Barack Obama has done to try and involve people, especially young people, in their future? I am admittedly not that politically aware and I still feel like he has made it stupidly easy for me to get involved or at least stay on top of some things.
This 1 political post that I will make is for anyone out there like me, someone who knows they should have registered to vote but just didn’t do it. It’s really easy to do it. Google it. I printed out a postage-paid sheet of paper, filled it out, taped it shut, and put it in the mailbox. It took me 1 minute. If money and technicalities and FOX News win Mitt Romney this election, at least I will know that I did my part.
THIS is the person that 89 of my 2,000ish Facebook friends clicked “like” for. I’m leaving them as friends, but I really hope each one of them takes the time to watch this video and think about the person they’ve bought into long enough to change their vote.
