Does Yelp Filter Positive Reviews if a Business Refuses to Pay for Advertising?

I have a friend locally who is a business owner and didn’t like the idea of paying for inclusion in being featured on Yelp which is exactly what they offered him. Ever since he turned them down, he has noticed that positive reviews are not shown me at the top of his results even though their newer reviews.

I was surprised when I heard this! I have used his business so I wrote a positive review because I’m happy with his business. It was not an in-depth review but it did turn up at the top of the results. I was a Yelp “elite” for several years in a row, so based on that, I’m guessing they “bury” positive reviews from Yelp members who have not written any or many reviews yet.

Marble Slab Creamery (5/5)

First I thought I liked Cold Stone. I do, but then I started liking Maggie Moo’s. Then I tried Marble Slab. I’m now a card carrying, mildly obsessed, junkie for the “experience” these guys bring when I walk through the door. And I’ve already redeemed a freebie card with no fluctuation to that experience. These places are basically the same. Premium ice cream with “stuff” folded in on a “slab” (the counter), while you watch. The items you can choose (stuff) vary somewhat, but it’s your basic oreo crumbs, heath, nuts, jimmies, etc. and each place has wonderful waffle cones and waffle cone cups. I’m sure there are bright energetic crews working at various Cold Stone and MM locations (there are many locations), but the people working at Marble Slab in Kentlands have a lot more on the ball than the folks I’ve encountered in their competitor’s shops in the area. The ice cream seemed a lot better here also. Maybe it was the “experience” that made it so great? You be the judge! 🙂 (via Shawn H. on Yelp)

Hoomoos Asli (4/5)

I have been eating here since they opened when I worked downtown on Centre Street and just recently visited NYC for an afternoon. I decided to visit my old lunch hour walk around that area for lunch and was happy to find this place exactly as it was back in 2000. Awesome food. Great people. I am a customer for life. Only four stars because the place is too small and only one server. This place is one of the things I really miss about NYC. (via Shawn H. on Yelp)

White Mountain Creamery (5/5)

While driving up Nicholson Lane late a few nights ago, I had a late evening ice cream craving. I remembered a great place just over the hill and to the right. I made the move. It was gone. Not closed. Empty. Out of business!

A sad day in ice cream history for sure. (via Shawn H. on Yelp)

Taipei Tokyo Cafe 1 (3/5)

As a sushi review, only three stars. Convenience would be four. The “Chinese” food? four stars also, but I almost always get the sushi. It’s not the best sushi. They mass make the rolls as the lunch hour progresses because of the half price lunch roll deal (best sushi deal in town). It’s a step above grocery store sushi (Whole Foods) but nothing like Uni, Tako or Sushi Ko. No, it’s not great. The place itself is pretty ghetto also. But the price and the location make it a top pick among many for lunch. I’ve occasionally had dinner there. They have a few newer, much nicer locations but they all seem very different and this is the only one I have visited regularly (because of the convenience of the location for me). If it’s lunchtime during the week and you are on a budget, but want sushi, this is the only place and you will be happy. (via Shawn H. on Yelp)

Dry Clean Expo (4/5)

You can tell these people care about what they’re doing. That’s important to me when people are taking care of the clothes I wear. I’ve been using Dry Clean Expo almost exclusively for almost five years now. The few times I have tried other cleaners that seemed more convenient have all been short lived due to poor service or lack of concern over damaged or improperly cleaned items.

I vote with my wallet and my vote goes to Dry Clean Expo!

Now, if you need repairs, they are a little expensive. But I need to break my lazy habits and use the needle and thread once in a while anyway!

Cactus Cantina (4/5)

Agree with the other locals about this place on politico-watching, the very good guacamole, the fresh chips and excellent smoky salsa… and the steps! They have excellent Cuban style dishes as well as some of the best fajitas in the area. It’s a great location if you are in Northwest DC. The server I had most recently was rotten but they are usually good. The food is excellent. (via Shawn H. on Yelp)
